Acne scars: what forms them, and what can honestly be improved
The acne itself settled long ago. What is left is skin that is no longer even, and it shows most when light comes from the side.
Why pitted scars form
When acne inflames deep below the surface, the inflammation damages the tissue around it. As skin repairs itself, it sometimes fails to produce enough new tissue to fill that space again. What remains is a depression.
Two things most often make it worse. Squeezing, because it drives inflammation deeper. And acne left untreated for months, because the longer it inflames, the more tissue is lost.
Worth saying early
Pitted scars rarely disappear completely, and anyone promising perfectly smooth skin is promising something skin does not do.
What is realistic, and what we see happen, is that scars become shallower and less noticeable until other people stop seeing them, and the shadow under side light goes.
Three types, and why the type matters
Pitted scarring is not one thing. These three behave differently, which is why the same treatment does not give two people the same result. The names are in English because that is the terminology used everywhere.
Ice pick
Small at the surface but plunging far down, like a needle mark. The most stubborn of the three, because the damage is much deeper than it looks.
Boxcar
Wider, with defined vertical edges and a flat floor. Often on the cheeks and temples, and it responds better than ice pick.
Rolling
Shallow and broad, making skin look wavy rather than pitted. This is the one that most often improves noticeably.
Most people have a mix of all three on the same face, in different proportions. That is what the skin analysis is looking for.
How long it takes
Scars form over months, so they are not repaired in an afternoon. Skin rebuilds tissue at its own speed, which is why sessions are spaced.
Three things decide how fast someone moves: the type and depth of the scarring, how long it has been there, and how closely home care is followed between sessions. The third is always underestimated, and it is usually what separates two people with similar scarring.
